Every skin injury or wound heals with a scar. The appearance of a scar however depends on the type and extent of the wound, as well as how an individual's body heals. Small wounds will generally heal without leaving scar tissue, but more extensive wounds can leave permanent scars.

Scarring occurs when the deep dermis layer of skin is damaged. The deeper the damage, the worse the scar. An injury does not become a scar until the wound has completely healed.
